Objective:
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive functional neuroimaging method that takes advantage of the optical properties of hemoglobin to provide an indirect measure of brain activation via task-related relative changes in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO). Its advantage over fMRI is that fNIRS is portable and can be used while walking and talking. In this study, we used fNIRS to measure brain activity in prefrontal and motor region of interests (ROIs) during single- and dual-task walking, with the goal of identifying neural correlates.
Participants and Methods:Nineteen healthy young adults [mean age=25.4 (SD=4.6) years; 14 female] engaged in five tasks: standing single-task cognition (serial-3 subtraction); single-task walking at a self-selected comfortable speed on a 24.5m oval-shaped course (overground walking) and on a treadmill; and dual-task cognition+walking on the same overground course and treadmill (8 trials/condition: 20 seconds standing rest, 30 seconds task). Performance on the cognitive task was quantified as the number of correct subtractions, number of incorrect subtractions, number of self-corrected errors, and percent accuracy over the 8 trials. Walking speed (m/sec) was recorded for all walking conditions. fNIRS data were collected on a system consisting of 16 sources, 15 detectors, and 8 short-separation detectors in the following ROIs: right and left lateral frontal (RLF, LLF), right and left medial frontal (RMF, LMF), right and left medial superior frontal (RMSF, LMSF), and right and left motor (RM, LM). Lateral and medial refer to ROIs’ relative positions on lateral prefrontal cortex. fNIRS data were analyzed in Homer3 using a spline motion correction and the iterative weighted least squares method in the general linear model. Correlations between the cognitive/speed variables and ROI HbO data were applied using a Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons.
Results:Subjects with missing cognitive data were excluded from analyses, resulting in sample sizes of 18 for the single-task cognition, dual-task overground walking, and dual-task treadmill walking conditions. During dual-task overground walking, there was a significant positive correlation between walking speed and relative change in HbO in RMSF [r(18)=.51, p<.05] and RM [r(18)=.53, p<.05)]. There was a significant negative correlation between total number of correct subtractions and relative change in HbO in LMSF ([r(18)=-.75, p<.05] and LM [r(18)=-.52, p<.05] during dual-task overground walking. No other significant correlations were identified.
Conclusions:These results indicate that there is lateralization of the cognitive and motor components of overground dual-task walking. The right hemisphere appears to be more active the faster people walk during the dual-task. By contrast, the left hemisphere appears to be less active when people are working faster on the cognitive task (i.e., serial-3 subtraction). The latter results suggest that automaticity of the cognitive task (i.e., more total correct subtractions) is related to decreased brain activity in the left hemisphere. Future research will investigate whether there is a change in cognitive automaticity over trials and if there are changes in lateralization patterns in neurodegenerative disorders that are known to differentially affect the hemispheres (e.g., Parkinson’s disease).
Quantitative Analysis of United States National Guard COVID-19 Disaster Relief Activities April-June 2020

Objective:
This study interprets data from NG situation reports (SITREPS) given to the National Guard Bureau (NGB) by each state national guard headquarters regarding their COVID-19 relief efforts from April to June 2020. This is the first published study about NG disaster relief utilizing quantitative data provided by the United States (US) military.
Methods:The SITREPS of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands for the dates of April 10, May 6, May 16, and June 3, 2020 were examined by two authors, to analyze the state NG activities.
Results:During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NG primarily provided security, performed COVID-19 testing, ran COVID-19 shelters, provided food assistance, transported supplies, aided mortuaries, supported warehouses, and deployed medical personnel to hospitals. Numerical data about the services provided, such as quantity, was rare, but is included as available.
Conclusions:The United States National Guard provided assistance to their local citizens in multiple essential areas. This elucidation of the uses of the National Guard should be considered during future governmental disaster preparedness planning efforts and can be extrapolated to international military disaster relief.

Introduction:
The COVID-19 pandemic created a public health crisis worldwide. Healthcare workers also became ill at a time when hospitals were overwhelmed with patients, leaving critical staffing shortages. Mass vaccination efforts were initiated in some cases without adequate civilian manpower. The governments of many nations utilized their military assets to fill gaps in care, and to initiate projects promoting public health efforts. The COVID-19 pandemic created a never-before-seen international military response to an infectious disease disaster. This literature review highlights the non-conflict assets allocated, abilities utilized, projects completed, overall effectiveness, and lessons learned by the military community worldwide to support their local populace. By collating this information into a single document, the collective global experience can be better analyzed and this information utilized to develop a framework for future disaster preparedness and mitigation planning efforts.
Method:Medline (PubMed), GoogleScholar and the JSTOR Security Studies collection were searched for English language articles from January 1, 2020 and onwards. Keywords used included civil-military coordination, hospital, deployment, COVID-19, vaccination, and healthcare. Titles were initially screened for relevance and the abstracts were then reviewed for a decision on inclusion. Article inclusion was determined by author consensus based on relevance to the objectives. Key papers were also hand searched for additional unidentified references.
Results:Data collection and analysis planned for completion by January 2023.
Conclusion:The COVID-19 pandemic created a huge need for manpower which was backfilled by militaries around the world. This literature search demonstrates how military resources were able to contribute to the pandemic response, including successes and opportunities for future improvement.

Introduction:
The COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity for the United States National Guard (NG) to assist in an infectious disease disaster. This study aims to interpret data from NG situation reports (SITREPS) given to the National Guard Bureau (NGB) by each state national guard headquarters regarding their relief efforts from April to June 2020. This is the first published study about NG disaster relief utilizing quantitative data provided by the US military.
Method:The SITREPS of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands are available for the dates of April 10, May 6, May 16, and June 3, 2020 through a NG website that requires government level access. These were examined to evaluate and analyze the activities directed by each state NG headquarters as part of COVID-19 response efforts. No other dates were available for analysis.
Results:During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NG primarily provided security, tested for COVID-19, ran COVID-19 shelters, assisted foodbanks, delivered meals, provided transportation services, aided mortuaries, supported protective equipment warehouses, and deployed medical personnel to cover hospital shortages. They provided services to children, homeless persons, residents of skilled nursing facilities, and Native Americans living on tribal lands. Service members (SM) sewed masks, provided translation services, and cooked in prison kitchens. All state NGs participated in COVID-19 relief to varying degrees. Numerical data about the services provided such as quantity was rare but is included as available.
Conclusion:The United States National Guard provided a wide variety of services through activation of its service men and women that impacted COVID-19 response throughout all states and territories. This elucidation of the uses of the National Guard should be considered during future governmental disaster preparedness planning efforts, and can be extrapolated to international military disaster relief.

Threat Awareness Training for Non-Governmental Organizations Deploying Humanitarian Aid Workers into Conflict Environments

Introduction:
The current war in Ukraine and the subsequent deployment of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) from around the world has highlighted the many potential dangers faced by humanitarian aid workers operating in conflict zones. Humanitarian aid workers may face both direct and indirect threats and aggression whilst on deployment, and given the rising number of global conflicts, the authors postulate a need to incorporate threat awareness training as part of pre-deployment training.
Method:A list of the top 22 rated NGOs providing international aid was obtained from CharityWatch. All 22 were contacted via their public email addresses or website contact pages to find out if they provide any form of security, tactical, or threat awareness training.
Results:Seven of the 13 NGOs that responded did not deploy staff into recent conflict zones or surroundings. All six NGOs who deployed staff into Ukraine or surrounding border countries, provided either security, tactical, or threat awareness training to their staff.
Conclusion:With the rising number of conflicts and disasters around the world, humanitarian aid workers are increasingly exposed to hostile environments and there is a compelling need for NGOs to ensure staff are adequately trained and prepared to handle any dangers and threats they may face.
Growth of prefrontal and limbic brain regions and anxiety disorders in children born very preterm

Background
Children born very preterm (VP) display altered growth in corticolimbic structures compared with full-term peers. Given the association between the cortiocolimbic system and anxiety, this study aimed to compare developmental trajectories of corticolimbic regions in VP children with and without anxiety diagnosis at 13 years.
MethodsMRI data from 124 VP children were used to calculate whole brain and corticolimbic region volumes at term-equivalent age (TEA), 7 and 13 years. The presence of an anxiety disorder was assessed at 13 years using a structured clinical interview.
ResultsVP children who met criteria for an anxiety disorder at 13 years (n = 16) displayed altered trajectories for intracranial volume (ICV, p < 0.0001), total brain volume (TBV, p = 0.029), the right amygdala (p = 0.0009) and left hippocampus (p = 0.029) compared with VP children without anxiety (n = 108), with trends in the right hippocampus (p = 0.062) and left medial orbitofrontal cortex (p = 0.079). Altered trajectories predominantly reflected slower growth in early childhood (0–7 years) for ICV (β = −0.461, p = 0.020), TBV (β = −0.503, p = 0.021), left (β = −0.518, p = 0.020) and right hippocampi (β = −0.469, p = 0.020) and left medial orbitofrontal cortex (β = −0.761, p = 0.020) and did not persist after adjusting for TBV and social risk.
ConclusionsRegion- and time-specific alterations in the development of the corticolimbic system in children born VP may help to explain an increase in anxiety disorders observed in this population.

Objective:
To increase knowledge of National Library of Medicine resources by using a train-the-trainer approach.
Methods:Workshops were held in spring 2016 to increase knowledge of 4 National Library of Medicine tools. Data were collected before the workshop and immediately, 3 months, and 1 year after the workshop. Knowledge questions were scored as 1 point per question; an aggregated knowledge score could range from 0 to 16 points. A paired t test assessed the change in knowledge from before to after the workshop.
Results:Four workshops were hosted, with a total of 74 attendees. The response rate for the surveys ranged from 50% to 100%. Knowledge scores changed significantly from 7.2 to 11.9 (t = 15, P < .001). One year after the workshop, more of the participants reported having informally trained others (56.8%) than reported providing 1 or more formal training session (8.1%)(P < .001).
Conclusion:Objective measures of knowledge and information dissemination showed that the National Library of Medicine workshop was successful and resulted in both short- and long-term gains. This workshop could be repeated with other populations to further disseminate information regarding the National Library of Medicine tools, which could help improve disaster response.

The present study aimed to examine if bilingualism affects executive functions and verbal fluency in Marathi and Hindi, two major languages in India, with a considerable cognate (e.g., activity is actividad in Spanish) overlap. A total of 174 native Marathi speakers from Pune, India, with varying levels of Hindi proficiency were administered tests of executive functioning and verbal performance in Marathi. A bilingualism index was generated using self-reported Hindi and Marathi proficiency. After controlling for demographic variables, the association between bilingualism and cognitive performance was examined. Degree of bilingualism predicted better performance on the switching (Color Trails-2) and inhibition (Stroop Color-Word) components of executive functioning; but not for the abstraction component (Halstead Category Test). In the verbal domain, bilingualism was more closely associated with noun generation (where the languages share many cognates) than verb generation (which are more disparate across these languages), as predicted. However, contrary to our hypothesis that the bilingualism “disadvantage” would be attenuated on noun generation, bilingualism was associated with an advantage on these measures. These findings suggest distinct patterns of bilingualism effects on cognition for this previously unexamined language pair, and that the rate of cognates may modulate the association between bilingualism and verbal performance on neuropsychological tests. A series of Polynesian pearls has been investigated with particular attention to the structural and compositional patterns of the early developmental stages of the pearl layer. These initial steps in pearl formation bear witness of the metabolic changes that have occurred during the pearl-sac formation. The resulting structurally and biochemically complex structures have been investigated using a variety of techniques that provide us with information concerning both mineral phases and the organic components. Results are discussed with respect to our understanding of the biomineralization mechanisms, as well as for the grafting process.

Background
Questions remain about the long-term health impacts of the 1991 Gulf War on its veterans.
AimsTo measure psychological disorders in Australian Gulf War veterans and a military comparison group and to explore any association with exposure to Gulf War-related psychological stressors.
MethodPrevalences of DSM–IV psychological disorders were measured using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Gulf War-related psychological stressors were measured using a service experience questionnaire.
ResultsA total of 31% of male Gulf War veterans and 21% of the comparison group met criteria for a DSM–IVdisorder first present in the post-Gulf War period. The veterans were at greater risk of developing post-Gulf War anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder, affective disorders and substance use disorders. The prevalence of such disorders remained elevated a decade after deployment. The findings can be explained partly as a ‘war-deployment effect‘. There was a strong dose–response relationship between psychological disorders and number of reported Gulf War-related psychological stressors.
ConclusionsService in the 1991 Gulf War is associated with increased risk of psychological disorders and these are related to stressful experiences.

Growth of large area, single or almost single crystal diamond is of great importance to the electronics industry. In this work, single crystal diamonds were implanted with C+ ions, inducing a subsurface damage layer in the diamond lattice. Homoepitiaxial diamond films were then grown on the implanted crystals using a microwave plasma CVD reactor. Films grown on on-axis substrates were dominated by large numbers of hillocks, renucleation and penetration twins, while miscut substrates exhibited stepflow growth. The homoepitaxial layers were separated from the substrate by a water-based etch which selectively attacks the subsurface damage layer of the diamond lattice. The films were analyzed by Raman scattering, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, photo- and cathodoluminescence, and x-ray diffraction. CVD growth on adjacent, oriented substrates formed a single, continuous diamond layer. The resulting homoepitaxial film quality, orientation, defect density and it's relationship to the underlying substrates were compared at various points on the surface, particularly the region which overgrew the gap between different substrates.

Introduction:
The Telemedicine Spacebridge, a satellite-mediated, audio-video-fax link between four United States and two Armenian and Russian medical centers, permitted remote American consultants to assist Armenian and Russian physicians in the management of medical problems following the December 1988 earthquake in Armenia and the June 1989 gas explosion near Ufa.
Methods:During 12 weeks of operations, 247 Armenian and Russian and 175 American medical professionals participated in 34 half-day clinical conferences. A total of 209 patients were discussed, requiring expertise in 20 specialty areas.
Results:Telemedicine consultations resulted in altered diagnoses for 54, new diagnostic studies for 70, altered diagnostic processes for 47 and modified treatment plans for 47 of 185 Armenian patients presented. Simultaneous participation of several US medical centers was judged beneficial; quality of data transmission was judged excellent.
Conclusion:These results suggest that interactive consultation by remote specialists can provide valuable assistance to on-site physicians and favorably influence clinical decisions in the aftermath of major disasters.
